Ep. 3, A: "Anthems for a Seventeen-Year-Old Girl," Broken Social Scene

from the album You Forgot It In People

Broken Social Scene's Myspace

DJ comments: I've been mildly obsessed with Broken Social Scene since I bought my tickets for the 2006 Lollapalooza. You Forgot It In People has the best production value of all the band's albums. In my opinion, it's a must-have for any collection.

The female vocals for this song are those of Emily Haines (Metric). When the band went on tour in 2006, they created the sound by harmonizing the vocals all of females who've ever been involved with the band. One of the two videos posted is their Lolly performance. — BJH

DJ comments: Alela Diane recently stopped by KRUI after a performance in Grinnell. Hopefully she'll make a stop in Iowa City during her next national tour.

I couldn't find a video for "Clickity Clack," but I attached a live performance of "Dry Grass and Shadows." — BJ

Ep. 3, D: "The Dress Looks Nice On You," Sufjan Stevens

From the album Seven Swans

Sufjan Stevens' Myspace
Sufjan Stevens' web site

DJ comments: I like him because he's cute. What girl doesn't want a multi-instrumentalist anyway?

I've heard Sufjan's concerts are pretty interesting. You can decide for yourself. — BJ

Ep. 3, E: "Elephant Stone," The Stone Roses

From the album The Stone Roses

The Stone Roses web site

DJ comments: I always liked these guys better than Blur or Oasis. Probably because all three bands made one really great album, but the Stone Roses didn't make numerous bad ones. (OK, Oasis' first two records are pretty good.) — cwc

Ep. 3, F: "Feel the Heat," Dirk Diggler feat. Reed Rothchild

From the Boogie Nights soundtrack

No video footage of this performance found during my brief search, but these classic Boogie Nights moments can be viewed:

Ep. 3, G: "Girls," Death in Vegas

From the Lost in Translation soundtrack

DJ comments: This runs the Lost in Translation streak to two shows. Perhaps we'll have to play the clip of Scarlett doing karaoke of the Pretenders' "Brass in Pocket" next week....

Check out some YouTube user's school project below.

DJ comments: I think my friend Eric and I are the only people who put A Weekend in the City in the same rarefied air as Silent Alarm. Are there others out there? — cwc

From the album Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! Myspace

From the album The Bends

Radiohead's Myspace

DJ comments: KRUI DJ's have been playing "In Rainbows" non-stop since it came out. I decided to go back to their second album The Bends. — bj

From the album In Our Nature

Jose Gonzalez's web site

DJ comments: Jose Gonzalez definitely has his mark as one of our most played artists. We will be seeing him over Iowa's spring break. Looking forward to a little acoustic love. — BJ

Ep. 3, L: "The Littlest Birds," Jolie Holland

From the album Catalpa

Jolie Holland's Myspace

DJ comments: Jolie Holland (The Be Good Tanyas) is a beautiful lady with a beautiful voice. Catalpa is another album everyone should own. — BJ

And L secured our Letter of the Day billing, so we played "Little Bird" from Goldfrapp's new album, Seventh Tree. Nice work, L.

Ep. 3, M: "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard," Paul Simon

From the album Paul Simon

DJ comments: Great song use in The Royal Tenenbaums. That movie rules. This video isn't too shabby either, what with Mickey Mantle taking Simon yard...

Ep. 3, N: "No Cars Go," Arcade Fire

From the ep Arcade Fire

Arcade Fire's web site

If I were to pick my favorite Arcade Fire song, it would be "Haiti," but I've played that song two or three times on the show before we went to the ABC Soup format, so I'm trying to go with something else. Thus, we go with the EP version of this kick-ass tune. — cwc

Ep. 3, O: "One Part Lullaby," The Folk Implosion

From the album One Part Lullaby

The Folk Implosion's web site
The Folk Implosion on MySpace

I really think these guys deserve to be held in higher regard. I find the bulk of their work more satisfying than the bulk of Sebadoh. I know the song I picked is not from the Dare to Be Surprised album, but let me tout that disc while I'm here. It's a solid listen, start to finish. — cwc

Ep. 3, P: "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want," The Smiths

From the album Louder Than Bombs

Smiths' fan site

DJ comments: The Smiths need an archivist. There isn't much in the way of official material out here on the Internet. Anyway, check out Morrissey doing this song....

Ep. 3, Q: "Que Onda Guero," Beck

From the album Guero

Beck's web site
Beck on MySpace

DJ comments: The lyrics are pretty hilarious when you read them. "Let's go to Cap'n Cork. They have the new Yanni cassette." Glorious! — BJ

My personal favorite is the "I saw a puppet at Tang's with a mullet and a popsicle" line; although the question "You doin' push-ups?" always slays me. — cwc

This is horrible:

From the album Control

DJ comments: I have a mutual friend with David Bazaan, so I ended up sitting with him for a while before his last solo performance at the Picador. His music seems pretty representative of his personality — I guess that's based on a 30-minute interaction, though. — BJ

Ep. 3, S: "Smart Went Crazy," Atmosphere

from the album You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having

Atmosphere's Myspace
Atmosphere's Bio

DJ comments: Atmosphere is a brilliant duo with Minneapolis's Hip Hop mega-label Rhymesayers Entertainment. I've always thought clean versions of songs were worthless. Now I understand how useful they are! — BJ

Ep. 3, T: "Turn Into Something," Animal Collective

From the album Feels

Animal Collective's Myspace

DJ comments: Animal Collective is one of those bands you either really enjoy or don't understand at all. I have one of my many obsessions with them last year. Sadly, I didn't get tickets in advance for their sold out all-ages show at the Picador. When did high school kids get hip, anyway? — BJ

Put me in the "don't understand" camp. — cwc

Ep. 3, Z: "Zookeeper's Boy," Mew

From the album And the Glass Handed Kites

Mew's web site
Mew on MySpace

DJ comments: This song comes from an album with some of the worst cover art in some time (evidence at right). You expect this kind of bad art from Millie Jackson, but not a halfway cool and relevant band of the now.

It's a bad first impression, much like how the first song on Bright Eyes' Lifted album nearly prevented me from hearing the other 12 songs on the disc, which would have been a shame. We should try to do an A-Z playlist of "Track 1's"; I bet that would be pretty cool.... — cwc

From the album Citrus

Asobi Seksu web site
Asobi Seksu on MySpace

Pay attention to local live-music venues — you never know who might roll through town. These guys opened for Appleseed Cast at The Picador not too long ago, and I totally missed it. (And how were they not headlining that bill?)

Ep. 2, B: Black Kids, "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You"

From the EP Wizard of Ahhhs

If Vampire Weekend is the current blog buzz, these guys can't be far behind. And like Vampire Weekend, I'm shedding my usual cautious approach to these blogger darlings and loving them. Go to the band's official site (linked to above) and get this EP.

Ep. 2, C: The Cure, "Jumping Someone Else's Train"

From the album Boys Don't Cry

The Cure web site
The Cure on MySpace

Songs from the Cure's first album (which is technically Three Imaginary Boys, which was slightly modified [including the inclusion of this song] and released as Boys Don't Cry here in the U.S.) don't get much play aside from "Boys Don't Cry," and I really dig the bass line on this song.

Ep. 2, D: Descendents, "Good Good Things"

From the album I Don't Want to Grow Up

Descendents web site

As a wordsmith, it always bugged me that these guys went with the secondary spelling of the word descendant. (I thought I should add to the mounting evidence of my geekdom.) — cwc

Ep. 2, E: Elliott Smith, "Son of Sam"

From the album Figure 8 (2000)

Elliott Smith's Myspace (it has a ton of his songs).

DJ comments: Elliott Smith is a great listen if you're having a rainy day and need music to keep you depressed — the man fatally stabbed himself in the heart in 2003.

You may have heard him on the following soundtracks: Good Will Hunting, American Beauty and Royal Tenenbaums.

Ep. 2, F: Leslie Feist, "Mushaboom"

From the album Let It Die (2004)

Feist's Website

DJ Comments: You probably know Feist from her most recent Grammy-nominated album The Reminder. This song is from her first album Let It Die, an essential break up record for any ladies out there. Guys should enjoy the album simply because Feist is a hot Canadian chick with a guitar.

Ep. 2, G: Gorillaz, "Dirty Harry"

From the album Demon Days (2005).

DJ Comments: It's the Gorillaz. You should know this by now.

Ep. 2, H: Headlights, "Cherry Tulips"

Ep. 2, I: INXS, "Need You Tonight"

Ep. 2, J: The Jesus & Mary Chain, "Just Like Honey"

From the album Psychocandy

Most people think of Bill Murray and Scarlett Johanssen when they hear this song. I'm just glad a lot of people got to hear this song in 2002/2003, as it seems timeless to me.

Ep. 2, K: Kings of Leon, "Red Morning Light"

From the album Youth and Young Manhood

Yes, I know this song is used in a car commercial. So was "Pink Moon." As is "The Funeral." Some advertisers have taste, what can I say....

Ep. 2, L: The Long Blondes, "Lust in the Movies"

From the album Someone to Drive You Home

Our friend Eric is going to see these guys in April. Jealous....

Ep. 2, M: Minus the Bear, "Pachuca Sunrise"

From the album Menos El Oso (2005).

Minus the Bear Website and Myspace.

DJ Comments: MTB played at The Picador in 2007. Being that I was obsessed with this band during my frosh and sophomore years (2004-2006), my undies were a little wet after the show. (TMI! — cwc)

I suggest checking out the song titles if you have not listened to MTB's music before. My favorites include "Hey! Is that a ninja up there?," "I'm totally not down with Rob's alien," "Lemurs, man. Lemurs," and "Monkey!!! Knife!!! Fight!!!"

Letter of the Day update: M was one of our two Letters of the Day, so we played "Absinthe Party at the Fly Honey Warehouse." Check out the video.

Ep. 2, N: Neutral Milk Hotel, "Holland, 1945"

From the album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (1998).

Neutral Milk Hotel's Website.

I always think my speakers are blown when I listen to this song. There is quite a bit of distortion built into the beginning.

Ep. 2, O: Of Montreal, "Lysergic Bliss"

From the album Satanic Panic in the Attic

Of Montreal's Website (flash) and Myspace.

DJ Comments: I love this song because it's all over the place. I love the different progressions -- my favorite being the last 1:30 of the song.

If you're going to buy an Of Montreal album, I suggest going for Satanic Panic in the Attic. Some of the others lack the sound quality and production value.

This video is for the song "Disconnect the Dots," the lead-in song on Satanic Panic.

Ep. 2, P: Page France, "Weatherman, Section Three"

From the album Pear & Sister Pinecone

Page France's Website and Myspace.

I immediately connected with this band when I visited its Myspace page. The quote next to the band's picture said, "there's a circus where my head should be." Feel you on that one, brothers.

Ep. 2, Q: Q-Tip, "Let's Ride"

From the album Amplified

Q-Tip web site
Q-Tip on MySpace

I got my hands on this album awhile back, only to discover it was a "clean" version. I guess the silver lining is that I can play it on a Friday afternoon.

Ep. 2, R: The Raveonettes, "Do You Believe Her"

From the EP Whip It On

The Raveonettes web site
The Raveonettes on MySpace

These guys released an album this week, Lust Lust Lust. I heard one song awhile ago, "Dead Sound," which wasn't bad. I've listened to the new disc a couple of times since Tuesday. First listen...eh. Second listen was better. This won't reach the depths of suck (relatively speaking) that their last album, Pretty in Black, reached, but I don't see a complete bounceback either. But we still have Whip It On to, um, whip out. — cwc

Letter of the Day update: I'm obviously quickly warming up to the new disc, as we played "Dead Sound" in honor of our second Letter of the Day, R. Check it....

Ep. 2, S: Stars, "What I'm Trying to Say"

From the album Set Yourself on Fire

Stars web site

The video I'm embedding is pretty cool, even though I've never watched a second of Veronica Mars.

Ep. 2, T: Tricky, "Makes Me Wanna Die"

From the album Pre-Millennium Tension

Tricky's web site
Tricky on MySpace

I still have Tricky's debut, Maxinquaye, among the greatest albums of all time. But I'm picking a song off PMT because it completely spotlights the vocals of Martina Topley-Bird, who is releasing a new single in a couple of weeks. It will get play on the Soup. Until then, enjoy the cool dynamic of a slow beat, Topley-Bird's wail, and Tricky's seemingly prompting whisper. — cwc

Ep. 2, U: Ugly Casanova, "Barnacles"

From the album Sharpen Your Teeth (2002)

Ugly Casanova's Myspace.

Something sound familiar here? It should. The band's members are Isaac Brock (Modest Mouse), Brian Deck, Tim Rutili (Califone, Red Red Meat), Pall Jenkins (Black Heart Procession), and John Orth (Holopaw).

Ep. 2, V: Vetiver, "Amerilie"

From the album Vetiver (2004)

Vetiver's Website and Myspace.

Vetiver has a heap of talent underneath the name. Several of my favorite artists contributed to the 2004 release. Artists include Andy Cabic, Devendra Banhart, Colm O'Ciosoig (My Bloody Valentine), Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star) and Joanna Newsom.

Below is the video to another one of my favorite Vetiver songs "Oh Papa"

Ep. 2, W: Wyclef Jean, "Bubblegoose"

From the album The Carnival featuring Refugee All Stars (1997)

Wyclef's Website and Myspace.

This song was featured on South Park's Chef Aid. Check out the video below to see Wyclef with Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny.

Ep. 2, X: X, "Johnny Hit and Run Pauline (demo)"

From the collection Beyond & Back: The X Anthology

X's web site
X on MySpace

DJ comments: This doesn't sound a whole lot different than the final version that appears on Los Angeles, maybe just a tinge more raw. Exene Cervenka = oh yeah. — cwc

Ep. 2, Y: Thom Yorke, "The Eraser"

from the album The Eraser (2006)

The Eraser's Website

DJ Comments: The title track from Thom Yorke's (Radiohead) solo album. I can't believe it has been two years since Yorke released this album! I am getting old — but not as old as Chris. Hoo-ah!

[You little whippersnapper! — cwc]

Ep. 2, Z: The Zombies, "Time of the Season"

From the album Odessey and Oracle (1968)

DJ Comments: These guys sure can harmonize! It was really hard to choose which song to use for these guys. In the end we decided to go with the old fail-safe "Time of the Season." I highly suggest getting the album Odessey and Oracle &mdash it's 27 tracks of 1960s UK pysch-pop.

Time of the Season won partly because it's totally the season for loving. You need to get close to stay warm in this hell hole that is the frozen Midwest.

Raveonettes, Headlights put out new discs

If you're too broke to get this week's new records, you can check out the new Raveonettes and new Headlights (and many other new albums) in streaming fashion at Spinner.

I had high hopes for the Raveonettes, but after first listen I'm not overly thrilled. I am about to give the Headlights disc a listen, and I have a suspicion that our listeners will hear something from the new album in just 65 hours or so....

Hello! Have some soup

We (Christopher and Brittany Jade), the long-winded DJs on KRUI's Friday 3-5pm shift, now have our own specialty show — Alphabet Soup. We'll be playing (at least) 26 songs per show, with each song representing one letter of the alphabet. Time permitting, we'll pick our "letter of the day," and that artist will have a bonus song played at the end of the shift. (V, Vampire Weekend, took the honors in Episode 1.)

For now, we're tying the list to artists. Undoubtedly, we'll branch out to song titles, source albums, geographic locations, or whatever helps us find a good song for the letters "Q" and "X" and "Z"...

We have one show in the books, from Feb. 15. Found below is the list of songs, along with links to artists' MySpace pages and (in most cases) embedded videos related to the songs we played. We also aim to offer the show in podcast form very soon; when we do, we'll post links here.

Ep. 1, A: Ambulance Ltd, "Anecdote"

From the album LP

Ambulance Ltd web site
Ambulance Ltd on MySpace

DJ Comments: I fell in love with these guys when they played Lollapalooza in 2005. They were staying at our hotel and were really nice guys when we approached them.

I decided to post a video, although it is not the song Anecdote. "Stay Where You Are" was the song that started my brief LTD obsession. (At some point you will notice I have had a lot of band obsessions over the past six years.) -- BJH

Ep. 1, B: Andrew Bird, "Lull"

From the album Weather Systems

Andrew Bird web site
Andrew Bird on MySpace

DJ Comments: I often refer to Bird as the Willy Wonka of music. His parents met at the University of Iowa, so he admittedly loves Iowa City. He played a solo show at The Englert in 2007 -- it was beautiful.

Ep. 1, C: Cake, "Friend is a Four-Letter Word"

From the album Fashion Nugget

Ep. 1, T: TLC, "Creep"

From the album CrazySexyCool

DJ comments: Brittany goes old skool on us. This is why we wanted a specialty show, to do fun things like this that show our oddball personalities. — cwc

Yes, I decided to go old "skool" with the TLC. I knew I'd hear some crap for including this song, but I had to play it. No matter how old I get, I will always rank CrazySexyCool among my top albums. It has too many 5th grade memories attached to it. — BJH

Ep. 1, U: U2, "Like a Song..."

From the album War

U2 web site

DJ comments: I have a never-ending argument with my friend Beck (not that Beck) that War is a better album than Achtung Baby. We're always drinking/drunk when we have this conversation, so you can imagine the high level of intellect. But I'm still right, goddammit. — cwc

DJ comments: Great song from a band I'm pretty sure I'd hate to see live. I can't see how they can re-create some of the cool songs onstage, since Zinner is the only guy playing any stringed instruments. Still, powerful tune. — cwc

Ep. 1, Z: Zack Attack, "Friends Forever"

From the show Saved by the Bell

Comments from the DJ: I always wondered if Slater actually played drums on this track. Wasn't he in Menudo? — cwc
