Movies, N: Natural Born Killers/Napoleon Dynamite

From Natural Born Killers: "Ted, Just Admit It...," Jane's Addiction

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: Do I like Quentin Tarantino? Let's see, he penned the screenplay for my "N" movie (although he seems to have disavowed any link to the finished film) and he wrote/directed my "P" and "R," so, yeah, I guess. This Jane's Addiction song was one of the first bass lines I learned after acquiring a four-string many, many years ago. — cwc

From Napoleon Dynamite: "Canned Heat," Jamiroquai

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: OK... this movie is SO old. My mom fell in love with it, so it played in my house almost every night after she saw it the first time. Regardless, Jamiroquai is used in movies all the time. If there's a dance scene, you can pretty much expect one of his songs to be featured. — BJ

Movies, O: Office Space/Orange County

From Office Space: "Shove This (Jay-Oh-Bee)," Canibus w/Biz Markie

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: Of course I wanted to use "Damn It Feels Good to Be a Gangsta," but that would have required some serious editing... — cwc

From Orange County: "Shadow Stabbing," Cake

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: Geez. It was SO hard trying to choose between this and Crazytown's "Butterfly." I'm still not sure that I made the right decision.

By the way, this movie was pretty stupid. It's like people in Hollywood say, "Let's make a movie and add Jack Black -- then we can call it a "comedy" and the kiddies will eat it up. Bastards. — BJ

Movies, P: Pulp Fiction/Private Parts

From Pulp Fiction: "Son of a Preacher Man," Dusty Springfield

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: Great song. Two albums you should have: the Pulp Fiction soundtrack, and Dusty's Dusty in Memphis. — cwc

From Private Parts: "Brass in Pocket," The Pretenders

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: It's the King of our air wave land, Howard Stern. Thanks to him, we can hint at masturbation on the air. Actually, Chris usually sits in the studio with his shirt off to make the program a little more shocking. Thanks a lot, Howard. ;) — BJ

Movies, Q: Queen of the Damned

From Queen of the Damned: "Excess," Tricky; "Change (in the House of Flies)," Deftones

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: Brittany and I decided to double up on the Queen of the Damned. Take that how you will. — cwc

I've never seen this movie; needed a Q movie and I love Tricky. So I'm including a clip of Tricky performing the song.

DJ Comments: I've also never seen this movie, but here's to remembering Miss Aaliyah. Also, the Deftones fcking rock. Here's a video for this very interesting song. — BJ

Movies, R: Reservoir Dogs/Royal Tenenbaums

From Reservoir Dogs: "Little Green Bag," George Baker Selection

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: Great bass intro, and an iconic movie moment using this song. See below. — cwc

From Royal Tenenbaums: "Fairest Of The Seasons," Nico

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: This soundtrack is so unbelievable. I'm pretty sure this is where I first heard Elliott Smith's "Needle in the Hay," which I listened to thousands of times in high school. So, we have Nico, Elliott Smith, the Ramones, The Clash, Bob Dylan, etc... It's just so damn good! — BJ

Movies, S: Singles/Scream

From Singles: "Drown," Billy Corgan Experience (aka Smashing Pumpkins)

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: This song, which preceded Siamese Dream and followed the outstanding Gish, showed the world that feedback rules. — cwc

Great scene from Singles with Stone, Eddie, and Jeff from Pearl Jam:

From Scream: "School's Out," Alice Cooper

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: School is officially out, Kids! Congratulations to all those who graduated. Oh, wait. That includes me! I'm done, bitches! — BJ

Movies, T: Trainspotting/True Romance

From Trainspotting: "Perfect Day," Lou Reed

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: What better way to backdrop a movie about heroin than to have Lou Reed sing about perfect days? Obi-Wan likes the junk. — cwc

From True Romance: "Chantilly Lace," The Big Bopper

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: God, this is probably the fourth movie today that I haven't actually seen. Does that make me a bad person? I'm sure Rober Ebert would hate me. "Two thumbs down, Brittany Jade. Two very big thumbs down." — BJ

Movies, U: Upside of Anger/U-Turn

From The Upside of Anger: "Passenger Side," Wilco

DJ Comments: By nature, I'm not a big Wilco guy, but this isn't bad. This movie is quite good, to be honest. What sort of gene pool results in daughters as hot as Alicia Witt, Keri Russell, and Erika Christensen, though? — cwc

A clip from life in the radio station!

From U-Turn: "Your Cheatin Heart," Patsy Cline

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: I believe Chris's words were, "I refuse to see this movie just because everyone else is slurping it off." Needless to say, I've never heard of it. I do love Patsy Cline, though. I hate new country, but I love old country -- especially the fabulous Miss Cline. — BJ

No, no, the movie everybody is slurping is Once. It can't be as good as the gushing suggests. — cwc

Movies, V: V for Vendetta/Vanilla Sky

From V for Vendetta: "The Girl from Ipanema," Stan Getz/Astrud Gilberto

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: Hey, another actor from the Star Wars prequels looking terrible. Portman can't blame it on heroin, though. (Enjoy the great jazz tune we pulled from this flick.) — cwc

From Vanilla Sky: "Everything In Its Right Place," Radiohead

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: I hate Tom Cruise. I have nothing else to say about this movie. I did not see it because I really, really, really do not like Tom Cruise. He can eat an alien ****. Well, let me rephrase that. I hate Tom Cruise past the 1980s. I like Risky Business.— BJ

Movies, W: The Wall/Wayne's World

From The Wall: "Goodbye Blue Sky," Pink Floyd

The album

DJ Comments: I remember being really sad the first time I saw this part of The Wall. Quite a beautiful song. — cwc

From Wayne's World: "Bohemian Rhapsody," Queen

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: I still pull half of my weekly conversation from Wayne's World one-liners. For instance, this last week I used both "Extreme Closeup" and "'Hey Wayne, my arms are getting kind of tired holding this.' 'That's what she said.'"

And what song represents Wayne's World more than Bohemian Rhapsody? I don't think there is one. — BJ

Movies, X: The X-Files/Xanadu

From The X-Files: "Hunter," Bjork

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: There's a Cure song on here, but I didn't pick it. Amazing show of restraint by the old man. (And it's not the best offering from the Cure, so there's that.) — cwc

From Xanadu: "Xanadu," Olivia Newton John

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: You thought the first time we played this song (during the covers show) would be our last, didn't you? Think again! X-titled movies are hard to come by these days. — BJ

Movies, Y: Yellow Submarine/You, Me and Dupree

From Yellow Submarine: "Yellow Submarine," The Beatles

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: When I was in grade school, we used to sing this song in music class. For whatever reason, we decided to sing it as Green Submarine. Best explanation: it rhymed. It makes way more sense than this movie. — cwc

From You, Me and Dupree: "Funky Cold Medina," Tone Loc

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: Chris and I were going to pass over You, Me and Dupree as a possibility for the show. We were sadly mistaken when we pulled up the Amazon.com list of music. — BJ

Movies, Z: Zoolander/Zodiac

From Zoolander: "Relax," Frankie Goes to Hollywood

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: Ah, the '80s. I loved this song. Actually, we could lose the "d" from that verb. I see some shitbag group covered this song for Zoolander. Bah. Luckily, the original is not cast aside. — cwc

From Zodiac: "I Want To Take You Higher," Sly & The Family Stone

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: And that's the end of the Spring 2008 Alphabet Soup show. Hope you enjoyed listening and that our stupid, pointless rambling wasn't enough to drive you away. — BJ

Friday, May 9, 2008

Movies, A: Almost Famous/Animal House

From Almost Famous: "That's the Way," Led Zeppelin

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: I don't care what my friend Beast says, this is a good movie. "That's the Way" is an underrated Zep song on an underrated Zep album (III) that got a shot thanks to this movie. But the clip below is the must-see deleted "Stairway" scene. — cwc

From Animal House: The Kingsmen, "Louie Louie"

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: Two John Belushi movies in a row -- think you can handle it?

Movies, B: Boogie Nights/Blues Brothers

From Boogie Nights: "Best of My Love," The Emotions

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: What a movie. P.T. Anderson rules. They could have released a third soundtrack for this flick. — cwc

From Blues Brothers:

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: I would have been ashamed had we not included one of the greatest music-based movies of all time. Early SNL brilliance at its finest.

Movies, C: Curious George/Coneheads

From Curious George: "We're Going to Be Friends," Jack Johnson

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: Jack Johnson covering Jack White. Works for me, hipsters. — cwc

From Coneheads: Paul Simon, "Kodachrome"

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: Maybe this is a 6th degrees show today. Here's another SNL movie from Dan Akroyd. And what would an SNL film be without Paul Simon? Nothing. However, what is a movie without "Tainted Love"? (Please excuse the crappy quality.)

Movies, D: Do the Right Thing/Dazed and Confused

From Do the Right Thing: "Fight the Power," Public Enemy

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: This song gets played like 20 times in the movie. Still not sick of it. — cwc

From Dazed and Confused: War, "Low Rider"

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: Matching "Low Rider" with a crappy car immediately makes it 1,000 times cooler. Just a note to the junk drivers out there. -- BJ

Movies, E: Edward Scissorhands/Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

From Edward Scissorhands: "Introduction (Titles)," Danny Elfman

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: Yeah, I was excited to see this movie because the main dude looked like Robert Smith, but the Danny Elfman score is what makes this cool. — cwc

From Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: The Willowz, "Something"

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: I was SO confused by this movie the first time I watched it. I got it in the end, but watching a second time helped tremendously. This soundtrack was really depressing. Somehow they managed to choose a depressing Polyphonic Spree song.

Movies, F: Full Metal Jacket/Ferris Bueller's Day Off

From Full Metal Jacket: "These Boots Are Made for Walking," Nancy Sinatra

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: The clip below kinda says it all. — cwc

From Ferris Bueller's Day Off: The Beatles, "Twist and Shout"

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: Greatest. Scene. Ever.

Movies, G: GoodFellas/Ghostbusters

From GoodFellas: "Mannish Boy," Muddy Waters

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: This whole soundtrack rules, and you could have released another whole disc of music that was in the movie that didn't make the cut here. Muddy Waters beats out Aretha, Cream, and Tony Bennett for inclusion today. — cwc

I can't find the scene with Muddy Waters' song, so let's go with the infamous pistol-whippin'.

From Ghostbusters: Ray Parker Jr., "Ghostbusters"

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: Jesus. We have yet another Bill Murray or Dan Akroyd movie. I'm seeing a trend here... Also, you can't tell me isn't the (if not one of the) ultimate movie theme songs ever.

I do want to note that when I was thinking about potential movies to include in the "G," I absolutely underestimated the potential for this letter. What do you choose? The Graduate, The Godfather, Ghost World, Garden State?

Movies, H: Help!/Hot Fuzz

From Help!: "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away," The Beatles

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: I think this movie is hilarious. Zany, even. And this scene sums up the Fab Four quite well: John is the fearless leader, Paul is the preening pretty boy, George is the underappreciated genius, and Ringo is a boner (in a good way, of course). — cwc

From Hot Fuzz: The Fratellis, "Baby Fratelli"

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: Having not seen Hot Fuzz, I was shocked at how kick ass the soundtrack was. Who knew that it featured bands like The Kinks, XTC, Eels, The Fratellis...

And check out the trailer for Chris's all-time favorite flick -- Hammerhead: Shark Frenzy

Movies, I: I Am Sam/Into The Wild

From I Am Sam, "Strawberry Fields Forever," Ben Harper

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: A cool cover from the worst movie of all time. Hands down. — cwc

From Into The Wild: Eddie Vedder, "No Ceiling"

Movie soundtrack

DJ: As most have probably heard already -- Eddie Vedder did all the music for this film. "No Ceiling" is the second song off the soundtrack for an incredible true story. -- BJ

Movies, J: Juno/Jarhead

From Juno, "Anyone Else But You," Michael Cera and Ellen Page

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: I still like this closing scene. No backlash here, bitches. — cwc

Jarhead Naughty By Nature, "O.P.P."

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: You down with O.P.P.?

Movies, K: Kids/Kill Bill, Vol. 1

From Kids: "Jenny's Theme," Folk Implosion

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: My friend Sam and I love this movie, and we love this song. If there was ever a snapshot moment of that movie's feel, it was the scene with this song. — cwc

Here's a vid of a much more popular song from this soundtrack, "Natural One."

From Kill Bill: Nancy Sinatra, "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)"

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: Everyone knows Nancy Sinatra -- largely because of her boots, but I feel like a lot of people (at least myself and some friends I've spoken to) did not know this song before the movie featured it.

Movies, L: Lost in Translation/Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou

From Lost in Translation: "Sometimes," My Bloody Valentine

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: My first of back-to-back Sofia Coppola movies. She makes good movies, partially because she picks great music to work with. — cwc

From Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou: David Bowie, "Queen Bitch"

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: All of the Wes Anderson films are spectacular. For someone with films like this, it's no surprise the soundtracks generally rock. Wait for next week -- we'll be featuring more Anderson flick music. -- BJ

Movies, M: Marie Antoinette/Memento

From Marie Antoinette: The Cure, "Plainsong"

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: Gorgeous moment in this pretty decent movie involves a grand procession with this sweeping song behind it. My favorite band, my favorite song by my favorite band, but not my favorite song of all time. (That would be "A Day in the Life," The Beatles.) — cwc

From Memento: Radiohead, "Treefingers"

Movie soundtrack

DJ Comments: I've never seen this movie. Chris about shit his pants when I told him that. Sorry, buddy. Again, a good soundtrack to match a good movie. Hoorah!

Ep. 10, A: Architecture in Helsinki, "Imaginary Ordinary"

From the album Fingers Crossed

Architecture in Helsinki:   Web site   MySpace

DJ comments: I still say these guys, at least on the Fingers Crossed album, sound like a bunch of band geeks who get locked in a band room and decided to record some goofy shit. It also sounds like they sampled sounds from an old Atari video game system. Which means I like 'em. — cwc

Ep. 10, B: Be Your Own Pet, "The Kelly Affair"

From the album Get Awkward

Be Your Own Pet:   Web site   MySpace

DJ comments: You will start to notice a pattern in my song choices this week (the A-M portion of the program): all short songs (<3 mins). We'll be talking with the Hancher marketing dude later in the show, so I'm trying to be accommodating. Plus, I can play a bunch of punky stuff this way. Win-win. (I had nothing to say about Be Your Own Pet.) — cwc

Ep. 10, C: The Clash, "London's Burning"

From the album The Clash

The Clash:   Web site   MySpace

DJ comments: Do you want to know where the Austin Powers/bad British teeth stereotype comes from? Watch the movie Punk: Attitude and look for Mick Jones' speaking parts. Yeesh. (You really should watch that movie.) — cwc

Ep. 10, D: Descendents, "Coolidge"

From the album Somery

Descendents:   Web site   MySpace

DJ comments: My cousin Josh played these guys for me back in 1987 or 88, can't remember exactly. This was pre-Internet, pre-Napster/file sharing, pre-widespread availability of satellite TV (hence, no MTV in my town, not on our cable system). This was when I lived in the metropolis of Waukon, and had to rely on catching wind of cool music from relatives who lived in bigger cities or from brief articles in Thrasher magazine. Needless to say, Descendents was a lot different from the shit they played on Z93 out of LaCrosse, Wis.; I was hooked. (I mean, c'mon, you can only hear Cutting Crew so many times before you say "enough is enough.") I'm still hooked, 20 (or 21) years later. All! — cwc

Ep. 10, E: Elastica, "Connection"

From the album Elastica

Elastica:   Fan site   Unofficial MySpace

DJ comments: Justine Frischmann, yo. Heat! — cwc

Ep. 10, F: Fugazi, "Public Witness Program"

From the album In on the Kill Taker

Fugazi:   Web site   MySpace

DJ comments: Back when I was in college, these dudes used to play $5 shows. Always. Never charged more than that. Of course, in 2008 dollars, that equals about $48, so I have no valid point. — cwc

Can't find a vid for this song, so let's go with this homemade clip for another good Fugazi song, "Waiting Room":

Ep. 10, G: Green Day, "She"

From the album Dookie

Green Day:   Web site   MySpace

DJ comments: You can be/pretend to be as cool as you want to be; I'm as guilty as the next guy or gal of this crime at times. But if you don't think this is a good tune, or if you don't at least find it a little bit catchy, you are either: a.) deaf; or b.) trying WAAAAAAAAY TOOOOOOOO HAAAAARRRRRD at the whole "I'm too cool" thing. — cwc

Ep. 10, H: The Hives, "Two-Timing Touch and Broken Bones"

From the album Tyrannosaurus Hives

The Hives:   Web site   MySpace

DJ comments: Why do these guys rule? They make fat dudes like me feel like they can rock out (guitar player is a bit rotund) and they have cool names: Dr. Matt Destruction, Chris Dangerous, Howlin' Pelle Almqvist... — cwc

Ep. 10, I: I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness, "When You Go Out"

From the ep I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness

I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness:   Web site   MySpace

DJ comments: These guys have become my favorite long-named Austin band, surpassing ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead for top honors. Both lag behind Explosions in the Sky when Austin bands of any name length are considered. — cwc

I pretty much flipped a coin on which ILYBICD song to play, so I'll post a video for the other song, "The Owl":

Ep. 10, J: Joy Division, "Warsaw"

From the album Substance 1977-1980

Joy Division:   MySpace

DJ comments: Have you seen Control yet? Do so. — cwc

Ep. 10, K: The Kooks, "Seaside"

From the album Inside In/Inside Out

The Kooks:   Web site   MySpace

DJ comments: Everybody hates the new album, I guess. So here's a bonus track from the old one. — cwc

Ep. 10, L: Jenny Lewis, "Melt Your Heart"

From the album Rabbit Fur Coat

Jenny Lewis:   Web site   MySpace

DJ comments: She and the Watson Twins should do this full-time, if you ask me. — cwc

Ep. 10, M: My Brightest Diamond, "Golden Star"

From the album Bring Me the Workhorse

My Brightest Diamond:   Web site   MySpace

DJ comments: I appreciate that Shara hits that really high note in the session video seen below. Brittany always rocks that part air-band style in the studio when we play this song, but she's too scared to actually let loose a high note. — cwc

What Chris doesn't realize that I'm hitting a note too high for human ears. — BJ

Ep. 10, N: Nouvelle Vague, "Dance With Me"

From the album Bande A Part

Nouvelle Vague:   Web site   MySpace

DJ comments: The only French songstress I know. I feel like you never see bands from France... what's up with that? And, on another note, what's up with airline food these days? *buh-dum ching* — BJ

Ep. 10, O: Oasis, "Champagne Supernova"

From the album (What's the Story) Morning Glory?

Oasis:   Web site   MySpace

DJ comments: This one takes you back, doesn't it? — BJ

Ep. 10, P- Pinback, "Penelope"

From the album Blue Screen Life

Pinback:   Web site   MySpace

DJ comments: I have yet to hear all of their 2007 album Autumn of the Seraphs . Blue Screen Life was their second full-lengther, released in 2001 (the band formed in San Diego in 1998). — BJ

Ep. 10, Q: Queen, "Another One Bites the Dust"

From the album The Game

Queen:   Web site

DJ comments: The "Q" is a bit of a struggle. You name a Q band and I probably don't like it that much (I won't name names). It's just easier to go back to Queen -- everyone loves them anyway, right? — BJ

Ep. 10, R: Rilo Kiley, "Paint's Peeling"

From the album The Execution of All Things

Rilo Kiley:   Web site   MySpace

DJ comments: I saw that Chris posted a Jenny Lewis song. Last week we were Emily Haines-obsessed; this week it's Jenny Lewis. How can you not be obsessed though? She was the girl in Troop Beverly Hills and The Wizard (not to be confused with Kerry Green in The Goonies). Also, her guitarist, Blake Sennett, is the bully from Boy Meets World. Who says child stars can't have adult careers?

Rilo Kiley is playing all over this summer. I know I'm hoping to catch one performance this year. —BJ

Ep. 10, S: Sigur Rós, "Með Blóðnasir"

From the album Takk

Sigur Rós:   Web site   MySpace

DJ comments: I tried to choose the shortest Sigur Rós song I liked. Last NME reported a potential 2008 release from the Icelandic band. —BJ

Ep. 10, T: Tool, "Stinkfist"

From the album Ænima

Tool:   Web site

DJ comments: Take note of the title and listen to the lyrics. Imagine having your arm in such a place to make someone else feel very uncomfortable.

I love Tool. I don't know why we haven't played one of their songs before. I'm sure the metal boys at Pita Pit will be happy on this one. I'm pretty sure the videos are done by Adam Jones, the band's guitarist. I wouldn't suggest watching any of them before bed. —BJ

Ep. 10, U: Ugly Casanova, "Loop Theory"

From the album Sharpen Your Teeth

Ugly Casanova: MySpace

DJ comments: Just makes me so happy to hear this. This album is just awesome the whole way through. It also reminds me of my friend Shani, who is now making movies in New York City. He's the biggest Isaac Brock fan I know. His Myspace name is actually "Ugly Casanova" and has been since I've known him. — BJ

Ep. 10, V: Veruca Salt, "Seether"

From the album American Thighs

Veruca Salt:   Web site   MySpace

DJ comments: This one takes me back to my angst-ridden high school days. I loved driving my PT Cruiser around with Veruca Salt screeching out the windows. I was such a bad ass. — BJ

Ep. 10, W: Why?, "Rubber Traits"

From the album Elephant Eyelash

Why?:   MySpace

DJ comments: Pitchfork review of their newest album, Alopecia. I haven't listened to these guys that much, but I can dig after a few tracks. — BJ

Ep. 10, X: XTC, "The Mayjor of Simpleton"

From the album Oranges & Lemons

XTC:   Web site   MySpace

DJ comments: The in-studio CD guide says this is "The Best Anglo-Pop Ever!" Whatever that means... They're a British band who performed from the early 70s until 2005. They released Oranges & Lemons in 1989. Dig it or not - it's an X. — BJ

Ep. 10, Y: Yo La Tengo, "Watch Out For Me Ronnie"

From the album I'm Not Afraid of Your and I'll Beat Your Ass

Yo La Tengo:   Web site   MySpace

DJ comments: What a great album name. It seems like there is a running theme against bullies. Dig. — BJ

Ep. 10, Z: Rob Zombie, "The Scorpion Sleeps"

From the album Educated Horses

Rob Zombie:   Web site   MySpace

DJ comments: Yeah, we're not afraid to play a Rob Zombie song on here! In fact, Chris and I will be sodomizing each other in the studio in honor of Mr. Zombie.

Too much? — BJ
